CINDY OMATSU

Cynthia Ann Omatsu was born and raised in Torrance, CA where she is the 4th of 5 children, having 2 brothers and 2 sisters. She attended Modrona Elementary school and moved onto Torrance High School. She later got her AA degree from El Camino Junior College.

Cindy is the first Asian in America to receive her Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt as well as the first female. She studied at the IMB Academy with Richard Bustillo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Rigan Machado and Leka Vieira, boxing and kickboxing with June Castro, Krav Maga with Mitch Tavera and wrestling at R-1 (formerly Raw Gym) with Frank Trigg and Rico Chiparelli. Training in Jiu Jitsu now for 11 years, Cindy received her black belt from Rigan Machado and Leka Vieira.

Competing has taken Cindy across the nation where she took first place at the Pan Americans in Hawaii and 3rd place in the Pan-Americans in Florida. She has also traveled to Brazil with Leka Vieira.

When asked how she got into martial arts, Cindy replies, “ I started BJJ for self-defense purposes. I saw a class going on at the Gold’s Gym in Redondo Beach. A lot of women were getting attacked at the time so I thought this would be a great class to take.

Although a little hesitant at first because the class was all guys, I stepped into the door and onto the mat and now 11 years later I am still learning, training and instructing”.

When asked what your philosophies on training are, Cindy answered, “My philosophy on training has always been, when I am not having fun anymore and not enjoying it, than its time to quit, and so far that hasn’t happened”.

Cindy continues to explain, “ Leka once told me that you have to believe in yourself when it comes to competition. So that is something that I will always remember. Sometimes getting out of your comfort zone is hard to do but you can sit there and wish you did it or do it and never regret it, whatever the outcome may be”.

Cindy is truly the poster-girl of a true athlete and all around good human being. In this industry where everyone is competitive and focused on their own successes, Cindy is probably the one person that you will find that everyone absolutely loves, both men and women alike. I don’t think you will find a single soul who doesn’t like and adore Cindy. She exudes confidence and strength while at the same time projecting such compassion, patience, and understanding. You won’t find a person with a bigger capacity to care and share with others. It is because of her greatness both physically, mentally and compassionately, that Cindy is our very first Fighter of the Month. She encompasses everything that makes for a superior athlete and person. I personally am honored to call Cindy my friend and someday I hope to earn the respect and admiration with my fellow competitors as Cindy has earned from everyone she comes in contact with.

Cindy has completed her very first training video with fellow-Machado student, Felicia Oh.
